Starting to Declutter
Do you have a space in your home that collects clutter from the rest of your house? Perhaps it’s laundry, toys, odds and ends or paperwork? If so, you are not alone. I’ve been inspired and encouraged as I’ve watched Dawn, from “The Minimal Mom” and her process for decluttering and simplifying our homes. In this post I’m going to share with you the process of tidying and decluttering a space that I’ve been wanting to tackle for a long time- our master bedroom. Laundry
Since the bulk of the clutter in this room was from laundry that needed to be sorted, folded, and put away, I started with this task first. When there is so much to put away it can feel daunting and discouraging. But, it helps me to remind myself that every item I put away is getting one step closer to a tidy space.
Socks
I found that we had lots and lots of socks without a match. Every time I found a match, it was definitely a “win”. After sorting through all of the laundry in the room, I ended up placing a number of socks in our “missing sock” laundry bin to review once all of our laundry is done.
Donate
While I was tidying the room, I ended up setting some items aside to be donated. I also placed some items in our “memory bins.” Additionally, I did move some items into other spaces of our home to deal with them more thoroughly at a later time. My goal was to move anything out of this room that did not belong here, and to have it be a calm and peaceful space.
Time Frame
Overall, it took me about four to five hours to complete this project. It was great to have a block of time to dedicate to doing this. However, we know not every season of life allows for this kind of block of time dedicated to one project. If you have very little time to dedicate to decluttering, don’t be discouraged. Just five to ten minutes a day can go a long way in helping your space to feel tidy, decluttered, peaceful, and calm.
Clothes
We now store most of our clothes upright when it is in drawers, making it easier to see. For our children, I also hang up some of their shirts, pants, and dresses, as well as items that are matching. This makes it easier for me to find matching sets when I am looking for them.
Storage
I’ve also found that for items that I want to place in my attic and protect from insects or any kind of weather damage, large plastic resealable bags can come in quite handy. They are also pretty cost effective.
Decluttering Flat Surfaces
After decluttering the main part of the room, it was time to work on decluttering the taller dresser in the room. It is definitely true that flat surfaces tend to collect clutter.
The Results
What you are seeing is the day after the decluttering efforts. This week we had experienced some of the coldest weather I have ever experienced in my life. Inside, it was much warmer and my husband actually baked some homemade bread.
I’m excited to share the results of the master bedroom decluttering and tidying effort.
I am so thankful that after decluttering this space, rather than feeling stressful, disorganized, and burdensome, it felt, calm and peaceful. And, if my husband, or I, or our children, wanted to sit on these recliners to think, or read, or pray, we were actually able to do so.
